In this post, you will learn about spiritual healing. In today's face-paced world, more and more people are turning to alternative medicines and therapies to treat ailments, illnesses, and diseases. Let’s discuss the pros and cons of engaging in spiritual healing practices.

You’ll learn about how spiritual healing can be dangerous, in terms of victim blaming, toxic positivity, and other things. Later on we’ll share some methods and practices for spiritual healing. But before all that let’s start by talking about what spiritual healing is.

Spiritual Healing Meaning

Spiritual healing is a type of therapy where healing energy is channeled from the spirit realm into the body and directed to the area that needs to be healed. This can be done by an individual or with the help of another person.

Most spiritual healers look at the interconnectedness of the body, mind and spirit. Therefore, any health problem that emerges must be addressed in all three areas. The overall goal of spiritual healing is to maintain balance in these three areas. It’s a very holistic approach to health care.

I personally can see the appeal to this. It’s an alternative to more invasive treatments in western medicine. It’s also much less expensive than seeing a doctor, especially in the US where healthcare, medication, and insurance costs are inflated. However, I believe that western medicine should be part of the holistic health care plan when necessary.

Many spiritual healers will vilify drugs and medication of any kind. There is no shame in taking medication and it doesn’t make you any less spiritual if you do. Every week, we share the medicinal properties of an herb on the Talk Witchcraft podcast, and there are scientific studies that give legitimacy to herbalism. Many pharmaceuticals are created from synthetic replications of herbs. But we also know that herbs can not cure everything.

Additionally, I see people taking this too far. I follow many prominent spiritual healers online and almost all of them say that most medical problems start with the mind and then manifest into other symptoms that become evident in a physical form.

On the surface, that may seem harmless, but if you think about it, that implies that any physical sickness or disease is your own fault. It may not be entirely victim blamey but it’s creeping toward the edge.

Spiritual Healing and COVID-19

We’re seeing a lot of this with the response to COVID-19. There is a mix of people who were unwilling to wear masks from the beginning, and when the vaccine became available, they were unwilling to get vaccinated. Obviously, there is a political divide, but a huge number of people who don’t want to wear a mask or get vaccinated are from the spiritual community.

Their reasoning, at least what I’ve heard or read many spiritual anti-mask/vax folks say, is that they’re healthy. Their physical, mental, and spiritual health will protect them from the virus.

There is a ton of fat-shaming, like only fat people can get COVID. And also disability-, chronic illness-, etc.- shaming. And even agism. So that’s physical health. But of course when we look at the numbers, especially early on, but even now, the virus did not and does not discriminate.

As for mental health, that’s where we see the toxic positivity come in. Statements such as “If I believe I won’t get it, I won’t get it.” Or “only negative people get sick.” Or “the virus gets stronger the more we talk about it.” are not uncommon.

Even Trump said in that interview that he didn’t want to talk about the virus truthfully because it would make it worse. His dad was a very toxically positive person, and the Trump children weren’t allowed to talk about illness or anything negative. I’m sure that messed him up. It doesn’t excuse what a tyrant he became but we can still be compassionate toward him.

And then there is the holier than thou attitude that is prevalent. I heard someone say once that spiritual people exist on a higher frequency and therefore the virus can’t detect them. That’s a real thing someone said.

Anyway, all this is to say that spiritual healing can become toxic when taken to the extreme. When you blame yourself or someone else for manifesting their illness, when you shame people who aren’t in perfect health or who prefer the help of prescribed drugs and western medicine, and when you refuse to do the bare minimum to help your community during a global health crisis.

Spiritual Care Methods

If you are interested in practicing spiritual healing here are four methods to incorporate into your health and wellness arsenal.

1. Meditation

One of the most common methods of spiritual healing is meditation. This involves sitting in a quiet place and focusing on your breath. This can help to restore balance within the body mind and spirit.

2. Prayer

Another common method of spiritual healing is prayer. This involves communicating with a higher power or deity in order to seek guidance and strength.

Prayer can be a very powerful form of healing, as it can help to connect you with something larger than yourself.

3. Crystals

Crystals have been used for spiritual healing for centuries. Each crystal has its own unique properties and can be used to treat a variety of conditions. You can use crystals by holding them in your hand, placing them on your body, or using them in meditation.

4. Herbs

Herbs have also been used for spiritual healing for centuries. Each herb has its own unique properties and can be used to treat a variety of conditions. You can use herbs by drinking them as tea, adding them to your food, or using them in aromatherapy.

Send us a voicemail

We play one listener voicemail on each episode of Talk Witchcraft, with a few exceptions. To send us a voicemail, record a voice memo on your phone and email it to welisten [at] talkwitchcraft [dot] com. Please keep in mind that we only choose voicemails that are two minutes in length or shorter (even if they’re great!).

What we’re looking for in a voicemail

  • Share from your personal experiences (especially experiences that we could never have) and use that to illuminate the zodiac season or theme in new ways.

  • Ask questions of Erica and Maggie, so we have an opportunity to respond meaningfully to your voicemail during the podcast.

  • Use one of these prompts: Is there something happening with you and your life that aligns with the current zodiac season or a Tarot card? How do your experiences show us something new about the magic, something that we haven’t talked about so far?

  • Send a voicemail even if you’re behind on the podcast. If your voicemail is about a previous episode, zodiac season, or tarot card; that doesn’t mean we won’t choose it!

Tips for recording a great voicemail

  • Make sure you’re somewhere quiet.

  • Plan what you’re going to say ahead of time, because two minutes goes quickly.

  • Opt for talking freely based on a bullet pointed list rather than reading word-for word from a script.

  • Let us know if you’d prefer to remain anonymous.
