In this post, we will explore one of the most mysterious things about humans: dreams. So grab a cup of tea and get comfortable because it’s time to discuss interpreting dream symbols.

If you have ever woken up from a dream and wondered what it all meant, you are not alone. Dreams are one of the most mysterious things about human beings, and their interpretation can be very tricky. In this episode, we will discuss how to interpret dream symbols and what they may mean for your life.

What are dreams?

We don't really know exactly what dreams are or what they mean, which is probably why many people are fascinated by them. Dreams are essentially mental images and sensations that occur during sleep. They can be happy, sad, exciting, or scary – and often contain symbols that are difficult to interpret.

Why do we dream?

People have been wondering about the meaning and purpose of dreams for centuries. Why do we dream, anyway? The answer is still undetermined, but scientists have a few ideas.

One theory is that dreams are a way for the brain to process information and sort through memories. During sleep, the brain is relatively active, and it's thought that dreams occur when various regions of the brain communicate with each other.

Another theory is that dreams are a way for the brain to prepare for future events. For example, if you're going to be giving a presentation at work tomorrow, your brain might start dreaming about it tonight. This is called the "problem-solving theory" of dreaming.

There's also the theory that dreams are a way for the brain to deal with emotional issues. Dreams can help us work through anger, sadness, and other emotions.

Finally, some people believe that dreams are a way for our subconscious mind to communicate with us. The symbols in our dreams may be trying to tell us something important that we're not aware of.

So why do we dream? Scientists don't have a definitive answer. If you ask me there seems to be a little truth in all of these theories. And the reason for a dream depends on your current circumstances. But I'm not a scientist. For now, we'll just have to be okay with the mystery of dreams.

Tips for remembering dreams

If you want to interpret your dreams, the first thing to do is actually to remember them. Dreams are often forgotten, so it’s helpful to have some techniques for remembering them. Here are a few tips:

1. Keep your dream journal by your bed. When you wake up, write down everything you can remember about your dream. Use pictures and words to describe the scene and events.

2. Avoid alcohol before bed. Many people use alcohol to help them relax and sleep, but it is linked to poor sleep quality, which means you might not get into the dream stage of sleep.

3. Drink chamomile tea before bed. Chamomile tea actually relaxes the body and helps to induce sleep, which makes it easier to have and remember dreams. It helps to set the intention to remember your dream as well. I like to infuse my bedtime tea with this intention.

4. Maintain a stable sleep routine by going to sleep and waking up at about the same time each day. The majority of dreaming occurs during REM sleep, which requires a long sleep time.

5. Wake up gently. Turn off your alarm and avoid looking at any devices for several minutes before getting out of bed. This helps you marinate in the dream before fully waking.

How to interpret your dreams

Interpreting your dreams can be a tricky business, but it can also be a lot of fun. Here are a few tips to get you started:

One of the best ways to interpret your dreams is to keep a dream journal. This is simply a notebook where you write down all of your dreams as soon as you wake up.  Alternatively, you could record yourself describing the dream. When I do this I like to use the speech to text feature on my phone so that I can still see the words visually.

However you record your dreams, make sure you do. This will help you keep track of the symbols and images that appear in your dreams, and over time you may start to see patterns. These symbols that recur again and again may be trying to tell you something important.

It's also important to pay attention to the context of the dream. The symbols in your dream are dependent on what you are experiencing emotionally, physically, spiritually, and mentally.

Additionally, though many symbols are universal, we all have personal associations for symbols. Feel free to look up the meaning of symbols and events in a book or online, but don't discount your own initial thoughts surrounding what the dream could mean. I would recommend recording your thoughts first, THEN using an external source for further guidance and clarification.

So, how do you interpret a dream? The answer is that it depends on the dream and on your own personal context. But with a little practice, you'll be able to decode the symbols in your dreams and understand what they mean.

Benefits of interpreting your own dreams

Interpreting your own dreams can be a very rewarding experience. When you interpret your own dreams, you gain a deeper understanding of yourself and your life. Additionally, as we mentioned before, your personal association with the symbol influences the reason it shows up in your dream. For example, where one person may see a mountain as a symbol of strength and determination, another may see it as an obstacle or a block.

Plus, interpreting your own dreams can be a great way to deal with emotional issues. Dreams can help us work through anger, sadness, and other emotions.

When you interpret your own dreams, you're essentially tapping into the power of your own subconscious mind, which can offer insight. This can be a very empowering experience. It can also be part of your shadow work practice.

Send us a voicemail

We play one listener voicemail on each episode of Talk Witchcraft, with a few exceptions. To send us a voicemail, record a voice memo on your phone and email it to welisten [at] talkwitchcraft [dot] com. Please keep in mind that we only choose voicemails that are two minutes in length or shorter (even if they’re great!).

What we’re looking for in a voicemail

  • Share from your personal experiences (especially experiences that we could never have) and use that to illuminate the zodiac season or theme in new ways.

  • Ask questions of Erica and Maggie, so we have an opportunity to respond meaningfully to your voicemail during the podcast.

  • Use one of these prompts: Is there something happening with you and your life that aligns with the current zodiac season or a Tarot card? How do your experiences show us something new about the magic, something that we haven’t talked about so far?

  • Send a voicemail even if you’re behind on the podcast. If your voicemail is about a previous episode, zodiac season, or tarot card; that doesn’t mean we won’t choose it!

Tips for recording a great voicemail

  • Make sure you’re somewhere quiet.

  • Plan what you’re going to say ahead of time, because two minutes goes quickly.

  • Opt for talking freely based on a bullet pointed list rather than reading word-for word from a script.

  • Let us know if you’d prefer to remain anonymous.
