What is Glamour?

Before we talk about glamour magic, let’s kind of talk about what glamour is and how it’s perceived in society.

Many people think of glamour as trivial or girly. At the same time it’s sort of frivolous and extra. In this way, glamour is actually revolutionary and feminist in embracing a variety of ways one can appear in the world.

Feminism is really about revelling in the value of the feminine in a world that overvalues the masculine. And as a reminder, the feminine and masculine both reside in all things dually. So this isn’t about gender, it’s about energy.

Glamour and beauty are often diminished because they are associated with marginalized people. In this way, glamour can be a tool of the oppressed. Glamour is a secret passage that people who live outside of the status quo can use to fit in with the structural norm.

  • women

  • people of color

  • people who are in a sexual minority

  • people who don’t identify with a binary gender or the gender they were assigned at birth

  • people who have to overcome socioeconomic challenges

  • anyone else who doesn’t fit the mold

What I want you to see today is that glamour can be this fun thing that has conflicting ideas attached to it. On one hand it’s beautiful, elegant and powerful with kind of an edge to it but at the same time it can be girly, frivolous, and luxurious.

What is Glamour Magic?

So now that we know what glamour is, let’s get into what exactly glamour magic is.

Glamour magic is illusion magic, in essence. It is the use of magic to alter how someone perceives their senses. This could be how you perceive your own senses or how someone else perceives their senses.

Glamour magic is about altering the perception of all of the senses, and it is not limited to the typical senses of sight, taste, sound, touch, and smell. Glamours can also affect the sense of direction, perception of time, emotions, belief, impressions, hunger, thirst, lust, temperature, pain, and fatigue.

Glamour Magic in Pop Culture

It’s important to note that we can’t use magic to make physical changes because of the laws of physics that dictate our physical reality. So, you may be thinking of pop culture witches using magic to change their voice, hair color or facial features.

For example, in both the original and the remake of Charmed, the sisters must change their appearance and the appearance of their home in order to re-establish their safety.

Tonks from the Harry Potter universe is a shapeshifter and can change her appearance at will. The polyjuice potion is another example of a glamour in Harry Potter.

In the story of Snow-White and the Seven Dwarves, the Brothers Grimm and the Disney version both include glamour magic when the evil queen appears as an old woman to gain the trust of Snow White.

Ursula in the Disney version of the Little Mermaid, uses glamour magic when she changes her appearance to get Prince Eric to marry her so that she can keep Ariel’s soul.

In Stardust by Neil Gaimon, Lamia, one of the three sister witches, uses glamour magic to appear young and beautiful so that the star, Yvainne, will trust her.

Sabrina Spellman in the 90s version based on the comic and the newer one based on the graphic novel changes her appearance at will.

Of course, these references of pop culture glamour magic are not an accurate representation of what we can do in the real world. So what is the real world version of this?

Glamour Magic in the Real World

The glamour magic we are talking about today is not about making actual changes on a physical level, glamors function on a mental, emotional, and spiritual level.

A witch can use glamour magic to help embody traits like self confidence, bravery, peruasive speaking, ect. You would use glamours to help people perceive you the way you want them to perceive you.

Glamour magic is learning how to stand out when you need to stand out and camouflage when you need to camouflage. It’s figuring out what to do when: kicking open a door you need opened, attracting the attention of someone who can help you with your goals, getting your loved ones on your side to help with a project you’re working on.

In the members only masterclass I’ll be sharing more about how to create a glamour. Members will also receive a collection of glamour spells and rituals to try.

This post is an introduction to glamour magic so let me share some information about what it is and when it is useful with you now.

Tools of Glamour

You may be thinking that glamour magic is all about makeup and beauty products. This is part of the equation, or it can be. The tools you might use for glamour could include any of the products you already use in your daily routine.

So, glamour magic is partially on the surface, but it’s more than that, it’s also about what’s inside. If you think about the people who become famous for all sorts of reasons—actors, artists, musicians, politicians, YouTubers, socialites, etc.—it’s not just because they are good looking or talented. Lots of people are good looking and talented. A lot of the time there is another factor, the way the person is perceived by others—good or bad—that’s what brings them notoriety.

With glamour magic you are enhancing what makes you, you. Just like how makeup enhances your natural features, it’s not meant to cover up or change the way you look but bring attention to certain areas of your face. Similarly, glamour brings out parts of yourself that you want others to see and notice and this helps you feel comfortable in your skin.

So, glamour magic is not just fashion and makeup and beauty products, it’s not just what you are putting on the outside. Glamour magic is about using these items (or not) in order to show the world what you want them to see in you.

All of your shower or bath products could be enchanted based on your intention. Say you have a presentation at school or work and you want to appear authoritative to the audience. You could infuse this intention into your shampoo and conditioner and as you take your shower in the morning, visualize how you want to appear during your presentation.

Your makeup and makeup brushes can be enchanted or charged with intention as well. Maybe you are wanting to find a life partner, you can infuse this intention into these products and tools so that you appear more attractive and your personality is visible to the people you meet.

Lotions, perfumes, oils and anything else you’d apply to your body can also be used for glamours.

You can also charge a crystal with your intention to be perceived by others in a certain way. Then carry the crystal with you so that it can influence your aura.

You can make tea or meals that work from the inside out. As you drink or eat, visualize yourself the way you want to be perceived by others.

Who is Glamour Magic For?

So the way we’ve been talking, it may seem as if glamour magic is only for women or femme witches or girly girls. In reality it is something that everybody can learn to use in their magic.

It may be obvious how women and girls can utilize glamour magic and why they would want to. Our society teaches us that presenting in a certain way will help us succeed. Performing a glamour over yourself can make the world perceive you however you want it to. Especially for women who don’t like makeup, or doing their hair, or wearing certain clothes.

But what about men and boys? They are taught by society that they can just throw money and status at anything and they will get what they want. But many men and boys don’t have money or status. They can use glamour.

And if you are someone who does not identify as the gender you were assigned at birth or any gender, you can use glamour magic to camouflage as needed in the world. This helps with feelings of dysphoria.

Glamours can also be used to overcome racial injustices and prejudices. Race groups that need to assimilate into white culture can use glamours to appear in the world the way they want to be seen. In a world where driving or jogging while not-white can result in the end of someone’s life, glamour can be a protection. When bird watching and working in your own yard while not-white can result in a white person calling the police on you, glamours can change how someone perceives you.

Of course glamours are meant to be tools to use in the world we live in. I think it’s also important we work toward changing these realities, but in the meantime, this type of magic can be a protection.
